Just curious, cause I am sure I will never do one, BUT how do you get the pin out later, if you want to remove the gear?
Drill it out?

Guys,

I want to thank everyone for all their insight you have given up to this point.

This forum is an absolutely great community.

I have a fairly decent working knowledge of using the equipment, however, there is only so much you can get out of books.

As with all of my build threads it is multifaceted:

I get to show what I am doing so others in the future can use some of the info.

But more importantly I get this great feedback!

Nope just Beehive Springs shimmed at 1.800, Ray Sedman recommended them for his cam.

What kind of valve springs are those and where did you get them from?

They almost look like LS1 style. Compared to a stock spring/retainer combo, they are about 17 grams lighter; most of that difference is the retainer.

Measured the cam journal, they are OK. A bit oversize .0005-.0015, but what can you do.....

I also tested all the studs to 40 ft-lbs, so there are no surprises when its time to bolt the cylinders on.

I will say, they were quite reasonable from Ray, not sure if the price I got was because I bought a cam from him......

Built a fixture for the crank this week out of 1/2 plate so I could hold it vertically on the mill.

I used a 3/16 end mill to start the pilot hole, used a 1/4 endmill to relieve the upper part of the crank where the pin just pass through. Then drilled with a C drill and reamed with a dowel pin reamer to depth.

I used a 3/4 hardened dowel pin and slightly favored the diameter towards the crank instead of the hub/gear.

Part of the reason I built it so stout so that I could also use it on the hydraulic press for other operations if needed.

What are thoughts on drilling and tapping flywheel holes to 3/8"-24?

Necessary on street driven car?

Those GM bolts are tough, don't know anyone that has broken them, but don't know everyone. My car saw a bunch of side stepping in its early years, no problems. Did have a friend snap an axle on his modified EM Spyder.

I'm not sure it's needed, especially with your dowel pin installation. However, if you did want to go a bit bigger, I'd look at going to 10mm bolts, there is a much larger selection flywheel bolts in that size compared to 3/8"
