Down the rabbit hole, blow through turbo 140 build smoking smiley
Posted by: toms73novass ()

I have begun building the engine for my 63 spyder. I am basing the build on Dave Binnie's blowthrough 140 build.

To start with I am rebuilding the heads for the engine myself. Ken Hand has given me some pointers in the build.

The cores were in rough shape, but because I am seriously modifying them that was not really an issue.

Here are some pics:

Even one of the stock spark plug holes had tons of flash on the inside, I am timeserting all the spark plug holes anyway.

To remove old seats welded around seat parameter and they fell out.

Welded up all of the seats so the new deep seats have a good purchase

I installed new bronze valve guides and honed to size

Before doing the seats, I drilled 3 holes in the intake manifold so that I could hog out some material in the intake ports and get it to flow a bit better in the ports.

Flattened the cover gasket surface

Milled out the step

Made some guide drivers to insert into the new seat bores

Heated the head to 300 and froze the inserts and drove them home, didn't take that much tapping

Sanded and smoothed the chambers and added Singh Grooves did 3 angle valve job. Flycut the chamber sides to bring it back so no interference.

Still have to do the spring work and cc and equalize the combustion chambers.

I am thinking of pushing the envelope and doing a 9:1 compression ratio since I have the Singh groove. I will at least do 8.5:1.....

More to come.

Tom, The intake seat in the first pic looks like it would've been jumping out soon!! How "deep" did you place the seats ?

The originals were a real hack job!!!

The seat is taller than stock so you measure the seat height and bore the pocket to that it will be flush with the combustion chamber.

Yup the tools make the man! I enjoy the process of doing, learning, making mistakes and fixing them.

I have been collecting equipment about as long as I have been collecting cars. I restore most of the equipment I have because I get them cheap and restore them.

I have a mill, lathe, surface grinder, welders, shaper, die filer, laser cutter (only does thin wood/plastic) cnc mini mill and a larger cnc mill that I still have to finish restoring.

I found Dave Binnies write up about a year ago & was impressed with his modifications. I had a few conversations with him & he shared quite a bit of info with me. His 1st car was a modified Monza with just a pair of blow through carbs. He has since moved on to the 4 carb set up you refer to.
I will eventially go with the 2 carb set up & will use 1961 only manual choke carbs. I need to finish the resurrection on my 65 Corsa 1st. Then I'll get into the Blower mods.
Keep us informed with your mods. Doug Ward

Wow! You've done a lot of work on those heads. The only thing I see that might be problematical is the thin edge between the spark plug threads and the head-gasket land. That may have the potential of causing preignition.

Hopefully it won't be and issue, time will tell. I will be making sure that it is smoothed and no sharp edges. I might even cut that spot back a bit towards the gasket to thicken up the area to help prevent heat concentration there.

Here is a head that Ken had done running 87 octane with no knock and the spark hole area looks similar on the thin area.

Didn't Ken say you can run 10:1 with the groove?

Ok. I guess I missed that. 9:1 is ambitious.

A lot of us are running 9:1 turbos. For me long before this group existed.
