Oil pressure temp light issue
Posted by: tinneric ()

Ok, my 66 Monza 110hp 4 speed car just decided to turn the temp/pressure light on at times. It does it when it is cold or hot, and at any rpm. The lifters are not clattering and I recently changed the oil.

I checked the wiring going to it and don't see any obvious issues. When I unplug the wire to the sending unit up by the oil filter the idiot light goies out.

The light comes on with the other idiot light(s) when you turn the key to on. Once you start the car sometimes it is on, sometimes not, but mostly it is on.

What should be my next step?

A - Put a new sending unit in it?
B - Install a mechanical oil pressure switch?
C - ???

Thanks!

I'd hook up a mechanical oil pressure gauge to make sure the pressure is actually ok. If you have one laying around, it's a good way to double check the light.

As was said over on V V :

Check the wireS

The lead going to the oil pressure SWITCH is also branched off to go to the Cylinder head temp SWITCH....back where it connects to the main harness by the coil

Didn't you say it was going under the TOP Shroud? between it and the block???

There's a hole with a grommet next to the coil where it should go thru...

IF all this checks out.... get 2 new switches

Oil is cheap.. Cyl. Head SW is $25 new....well worth it as they come on at a lower head temp with age..... until they just stay on all the time..

If the light goes out when the OP switch is unhooked---

It seems unlikely that the temp switch has anything to do with it ??????

The wire from the oil pressure switch goes under motor towards the read of the compartment.

When I unplug the wire from the sending unit itself the light goes out, even with the other switch connected.

That is my thought, I am thinking either I have low oil pressure or a faulty sending unit.

If no lifters are clacking.. it's the switch...

$3-4 at your FLAPS

I still recommend with the age of our cars....new head SW also... Vair vendor!

I push my Vairs hard....I do not want the TEMP light coming on until it is too hot...

I just wishthe Turbo / 140 switches were available....575F ?? vs 525F???

Note: I actually suggest on engines with no temp gauge..that you run BOTH heads with switches.....

I've only done this once..a 65 95 hp that was used for work commute 130 miles each day..Hot in summer...always over a steep hill both ways....

We all mostly agree...#5 is usually the hottest....yet the sensor is on the opposite end!
