OT: My publisher released my first book to Amazon
Posted by: Joe West ()
Date: December 30, 2018 05:24AM

Hi Gang,

I do not use Facebook any more, leaving Corvair Center as my only “social media” outlet for sharing news. About 18 months ago, I was contacted by an academic publisher who was interested in a research paper I gave at a conference and invited me to publish a book on legislator use of communication technology. I have little doubt that Donald Trump’s use of Twitter (one of the communication technologies I examine) helped precipitate the publisher’s interest. I have been examining legislator use of communication technology for the past seven years or so, so this was a case of me being in the right place at the right time.

Over the past 18 months, I have been working on the book, and it is now on Amazon Link to Joe’s Book

Let me note up front that this book is intended for Ph.D. Level researchers and is not really meant for the general public. The book is both expensive, and full of math and statistical analyses that would likely leave normal people bored to tears. The only real application that this book would have for most people is a cure for insomnia.

Just thought I would share this news. It is a pretty big event in my academic career since publishing a research book can be a large factor in determining promotion within academic ranks.

Joe, there are filters for that! Over time life will grind you down to fine particles anyway, I suppose. smoking smiley

Now, there had to be someplace in your new book that you slipped in a reference to your beloved Spyder. Maybe a subtle comparison about the 1960s legislators needing to call for televised investigations to get attention instead of a simple covfefe tweet! I'm sure DJ meant Corvfefe anyway... grinning smiley

Congratulations on the book. Rather than read it, I will wait for either the movie, television documentary, or the Cliff Notes versions to become available. I already have enough things in my life to bore me "to tears", such as looking for the missing parts to my Corvair restoration.

Congrats Joe,

As an author of a widely used referenced book in my field I take my hat off to you. Writing a book is an undertaking, particularly if you work a day job as well.

I can say that I am an engineer, and yes "math and statistical analyses" leave me bored to tears. Don't get me started on accountants - they're a different species altogether I think.

Cheers,

James

Don’t hold your breath... I think the movie rights are worth about $1.47 right now.

Thanks David. I suspect it will not hurt. I go up for tenure the fall semester of 2019. If I do not get tenure, I may soon be a retired academic. <smile>.

Pardon me, but as we were continually remind during the previous administration, I feel that it is time to renew the reminder.
It is proper to use the title of "President" when referring to our nation's leader.
Anything less is showing blatant disregard for the office.
We are supposed to "respect the position and office", even if we hold the person in utter contempt.
At least that was what we were told. Do we have a double standard now?
