New Weber 3 choke carbs available $$$$$$$
Posted by: scottymac ()
Date: December 06, 2018 11:26AM

After reading an article in the November issue of CLASSIC & SPORTS CARS, I looked up the manufacturer's web site.

Although it looks like the British pound is loosing value against the dollar, a pair of 40mm carbs will run around $3,300. I didn't look to see if the consumption tax was included in that price, or if Yanks can buy them cheaper.

I'm surprised no one is making a knock-off clone of them yet. Like the IDF ones here:

Richard Parr who owns Porsche Mail Order, PMO Bought the rights from Weber years ago to produce the 3C carbs. And he does. Richard got with Paul Abbott, the foremost Weber guy and Paul suggested some changes. Those changes were made and the carbs are being produced. They are quite nice and I’m the order of $4500-5000/ pair.

To follow up on Texas Yenko Dude's comment, the PMO price for IDA (carbs only) is $3800 on their website.

Per Weber IDFs there are many knockoffs and some "fake" Webers being sold. It is wise to check who is selling what and if the price is too good it is probably from China and those $88 knock offs are surely of Chinese manufacturer. When I was shopping for new or used IDFs I was warned to stay away from any Weber look alike that was not either an old Italian mfg or new Spanish mfg.

Why Spain? So a short history on Weber. The story I was told is that the Weber factory was in close proximity to the Ferrari and Maserati plants. One or both auto mfgs., wanted to expand and the Weber plant was in the way. Weber who sold carbs to both car companies, for whatever reason, moved manufacturing to Spain with production under Italian supervision at that time.

One of the few companies today selling Spanish Webers is Redline Webers. Their product knowledge is excellent. I have used Redline and Pierce Manifolds for parts.

New is not always necessary, I bought used, but you need to check any used Weber for corrosion (internal and external) and worn out throttle shafts among other things. There are repair kits for a worn throttle shaft bores but why bother if you don't need to.

Webers are easy to work on, jetting etc., but not necessarily easy to jet/tune for the average DIY, including myself. I have a pair of nice Weber IDFs (Spanish), 4 carb adaptors and linkage and they are a pickle to get jetted correctly, since the IDFs were intended for individual intake runners and not the Corvair common intake plenum.

I am still working on "jetting", but even in my brief test time they really wake our little motors up.

Buddy has a '66 Mustang fastback with a stroked 427 Windsor and Webers on it.
He's had a steep learning curve trying to tune them himself, and every time he takes it to a supposed expert the different experts say and do different things to them, saying the last guy hadn't re-upped his Weber-guru status and his Weber-fu was weak.
And though it has a lot of power, nothing yet has actually made it a fun car to drive on the street.

But he's got a book and lots of time!

I expect JM3 to chime in at any moment, they might be pricey, but they still aren't FI.

IDF and IDA are 2 different worlds. Just my own personal experience building , maintaining and repairing but One guy is looking for the weber name, look and performance for the street then complains about the custom tuning, maintenance and fuel economy. The other guy has accepted the trade off for race application parts and really only cares about WOT where they work well. GGG I would take IDA'S at wot any day over FI

I think that at that cost,I'd be inclined to jump straight over to a stand-alone FI controller & a pair of Triumph Speed Triple throttle body racks...

I know guys running these on Datsuns and 13B's.. no issues, use Weber factory parts without issue. around $180 Landed in US. The company is also looking at knocking off triples but the demand is small compared to the twins.

JIMC:
Not sure if Weber licensed multiple producers, here's the original article from C & SC, page 46:

"Weber carburettor {sic} specialist Webcon is to restart manufacture of its 40IDA3C and 46IDA3C carbs, which were fitted to classic Porsche 911s. They are being produced using brand-new tooling that's based on the original Weber factory drawings, and are claimed to benefit from a number of new technologies."

I have no financial interest in any company producing Weber carburetors. I bought mine about 40 years ago for $150, answering an ad heard on Armed Forces Radio. That was a stretch on buck sergeant's pay, but probably one of the best investments I've made.

Here is an eBay offering for a set or original Weber IDAs from a 1971 911.
The guy replaced 'em with a set from PDO. which are no doubt superior, but I'd bet he will regret selling the original Italian IDA pair after they are gone...

$1860 OBO - sounds like a great deal from what I've seen on the market.

Another alternative to the Weber IDA is the Zenith 40TIN.

Zeniths were never thought of originally because they only came with 27mm chokes.
In the last few years, people have made larger chokes for these carbs so that
they can be used on larger displacement engines. Some even believe they are better
carbs than the IDAs.

The Zeniths can also be cheaper to purchase than the Webers.

I saw that pair listed the other day. It's a great price, esp I'd the throttle shafts are good. Plus, most sets you get you will need to rebuild anyway, and most likely want to choke them up and change some jets and air correctors.

Sure you can buy a rebuilt set from someone for $700-1000 more, but most likely you will need to spend $200-300 changing chokes, jets and airs.

So buy a rebuild able pair for $1800, spend a little time and money and be ahead of the game.

What’s a set of 40IDA’s worth? I have a pair from 1991, I think, with maybe 2500 miles on them, with k&n air cleaners and an extra set of honed 36(?) mm chokes I bought from Jon Brakke.

Carbs were purchased , and are in perfect condition.
