They were aftermarket accessories back when Corvairs ruled the road.

These are the originals - straight chrome wire.

Your only hope is to find 'em used.

eBay on occasion, or a Corvair Swap meet. Or, maybe someone here has a set...

I just checked ebay every so often and they came up. 40.00. They add 15-17% more horsepower since they add turbulence to the air as it passes over the car.

Doubt you'd get harassed. And every state will be different. This is out of the Maine State Inspection manual:

(8) Reject vehicle if any lens or lamp required by law or
regulation is covered by any device that reduces the amount
of light transmitted or reduces the area of illumination of a
lens or lamp by any amount. This includes, but is not limited
to devices such as tints, baskets, louvers, and mesh covers
that reduce the amount of light transmittance

I would like to see them do something about that one!
How is a street cop going to determine if these "reduce the amount of light transmittance" ? ? ?
That would take some sophisticated equipment.
Sounds like Maine has some serious Anti-modding laws!

It's not the traffic cop that is the issue. Most northeast states have a yearly state vehicle inspection. That's when they would "reject" the car.

What Bruins Fan said. If you took them off before inspection, the inspection station wouldn't know. Not that I'm suggesting do that.

There are a few inspection laws that are not all that clear. Like mentioned, how would someone actually be able to tell if mesh stone guards limit light?

On my 65 more-door, I had yellow "Fog lamps" hooked up to the high beam. (Inner head lamps) and the guy at the inspection station said that he couldn't pass it unless they were 'Factory installed'. I said they were. Passed. I guess here in Texas things are a little more relaxed. Never had a problem with 'Blue Dots' in the tail lenses either! smoking smileysmileys with beer
