I’ve been lurking here and enjoying the forum for about a month now, and since my new-to-me Corvair is due to be delivered this week I thought it would be a good time to come out of the shadows. I’m a retired auto tech and shop(s) owner (32 years in SoCal) who cashed out and retired to the beautiful Southern Oregon Coast 12 years ago.

I’m not new to Corvairs but I sold my last one 25 years ago (a ’63 Greenbrier that my family owned from new). I don’t lack for stuff to mess with, since I have a bunch of collector cars and a truly obscene number of motorcycles, but I always missed my Corvair and had it in the back of my mind to get another. I narrowed down exactly what I wanted, and when I found the perfect car that fit the bill exactly….well, I had no choice, right?

So, arriving from Texas this week is my new ’64 Monza Coupe with 32,000 documented original miles on it. When the original longtime owner passed on, it went to a museum where it was displayed for many years. This car is so original and correct that it could serve as a restoration guide. One repaint in the original Saddle tan; otherwise, just as it came off the line. I can’t wait to see it, and one of the best things is that I not only made a deal with the seller, I made a friend in the process. But I guess that’s how it goes with Corvairs, huh? Looking forward to enjoying the forum, it looks like a very congenial place and a great source of Corvair info. Though I know my way around a shop, I’m fairly hopeless around a computer, but I’ll do my best to contribute however I can. And I’ll try to be less wordy next time.

Welcome to CCF!

We love pictures, so please post them when you receive your "new to you" '64.

Hopefully, the technical issue with the CCF picture "server" will have been resolved by that time...

Hey Matt - yeah, the falls are just a piece up the road. I'm near Allegany. I'm up for coffee anytime, I drive (or ride) into town most days for one reason or another or just to 'exercise' something. smiling smiley

As you now know Mikey you are in good company in Coos Bay. WELCOME to the wonderful world of Corvairs. We look forward to seeing your car once you have it running around. 64 was a great year! CORSA as well as your local clubs are the best sources for anything Corvair. I hope to meet you one day at an event. We just all got together (including the Coos Bay folks as well as lots of Oregon members) at the worlds largest Corvair event in Palm Springs. We'll be back next October.

Thatt's not mine, Dave. The one I had my Dad and I bought new in Denver, at Davidson Chevrolet on S. Colorado Blvd. in July of 1963, and it moved with our family to San Diego in 1967. I took it over in 1980 and kept it for about 15 years; I wish I hadn't let it go now, but you know how that goes.

The thing about my Greenbrier was that the dealer didn't have one in stock like Dad wanted - 102hp and 4-speed - so they ordered it in from another dealer who had one in yellow. Sounded okay, so the deal was done. A week later, when we went to pick it up, well, it was yellow all right. I was a teenager at the time so I thought it was hilarious, but my Dad threatened to have it repainted on the spot. He never did though - it still wore the original school bus yellow until I stupidly sold it in the early 90s to a guy and his son from Dallas, who drove it back there from San Diego. I'd love to track it down, but the only thing I remember of the serial number is '3R126S...…" which of course nets me exactly nothing smiling smiley

Sorry, Dan, I don't know why I typed Dave instead. Brain fart.

And thanks to everyone for extending a warm welcome. I'm sure Matt, Lyn, Ed, and I will get together at some point soon. I expect the car early this week, and since it's coming on a big-rig, and you can't get a big-rig up highway 241, I'll be meeting the truck at the Mill Casino parking lot. I'll post the time when I know it in case anyone's around.

Dayum, Dan! That's it exactly, Davidson Chevrolet, haven't seen that view in many years. And the Greenbrier is exactly right, too, except that mine had the white stripe around the middle, as well as painted white bumpers and hubcaps. I wish I still had that old bus. As I remember, the "two-tone" option was some ridiculously small extra amount. Thank you for the trip down memory lane!

Oh yeah, Steve, all of them, except I don't remember Murphy-Mahoney, that may have been after my time there. But you forgot the big one, the one that I used to hang out at the most - Burt Chevrolet on South Broadway in Englewood/Littleton. As teenagers we'd go down there every year on the day they tore off the paper on the showroom windows and let the crowd in to see the new models. I particularly remember the launch of the 1965 models; they had a new Corsa convertible in the showroom, in Evening Orchid with black interior. That was true love at first sight for this boy. Then we got back in my '52 Chevy and went home. Slowly.
