VW powered Corvair !!!
Posted by: Early Guy ()
Date: November 30, 2018 08:39PM

Got my copy of Hemmings today I like the feature articles. I always check out the Corvairs for sale. One really caught my eye. A 63 Monza convert with an early VW 40hp engine in Tyler Texas. The ad says it retained the Corvair 4spd I would guess the engine would have to be reverse rotated. Seems like a lot of work to lose 40 horses or more.Anyone know this car or its story?

Other than a technical exercise in "can it be done?" I don't see where this accomplishes anything worthwhile.

The 'tunnel' in the car and the shifter show is it more than an engine downgrade. Note the speedometer doesn't work either.

From the add, some things don't make sense

Transmission: """Auto"""
Condition: Good

It has the original red leather interior and """four speed transmission""",

The engine is easier to maintain than the original and provides about ""40 more horsepower."""

Would be interesting if someone went to look at it... Praise the car to the seller and get him to let them drive it..

Who lives near Tyler, Tx.??

Looks like a dual-port 1600 with a single 2-barrel carb. This engine might put out like 60hp max. Even the weakest Corvair engine beats that by at least 20hp. Unless this is some killer bored/stroked VW engine, it's a serious downgrade for a Vair. Put a weak engine in a much heavier car, and I'm thinking that it would take from now til January for this car to go 0-60mph.

I just restudied the pics I think you're right Matt going by the cover between the seats and the straight shift lever. Probably a VW transaxle.

And if it does... it would be quicker accelerating / higher ratios / and will have an Overdrive 4th = 1- 0.8 20%

Okay, I stand somewhat corrected. The most powerful stock VW beetle engine was the 1600 dual port that was used during 1971. It was rated at 53hp (I may be wrong, memory is fuzzy) and with a standard transmission, did 0-60 in 18.2 seconds. The base 1960 Corvair with the 80hp engine did 0-60 in something like 19.5 seconds.

So, you're right, Matt. If it's a VW 4 speed, it would have some pep.

It still doesn't explain how the seller gets 40hp more over a stock Corvair engine.

I appreciate the engineering attempt, but IMO the idea is stupid.

A positive I can think of is you have something that you can use with the VW clubs, they are very active around here and you'll have the best looking car there.
