Installing Motohead Engine Cradle to Harbor Freight 800 lb Transmission Jack
Posted by: Lane66m ()

Here are a couple photos and tips for mounting and using the jack/cradle combination.

Mount the cradle using holes on jack lift plate closest to jack handle. Using other holes result in out of balance situation when engine is on jack.

Use lock nuts and large washers after you bolt the cradle to the lift plate using the threaded holes in the lift plate. Don't trust your power pack to 4 holes with 3/8's threads.

Test your jack prior to use to see if it will left a friend who has some weight on his bones. Don't need to find out the hydraulics are bad when the engine is set on the jack and last bolt is pulled.

Use the Skid Plate bottom bolt location to install a bolt of reasonable length to secure cradle to engine. It need to torque up with good thread engagement.

Lift the back of the Vair up so there is at least 32 inches of clearance fr4om rear bumper to ground. Still will have to remove the oil filler adapter to slide engine out.

I just pulled an engine and these facts along the way. Hope this helps someone else.

Nice instructions. I've never had to remove the oil filter adapter before though.

I have posted several times the correct mounting location for the cradle, Also it is not necessary to remove the oil filter adapter, I have removed / installed 100's of Corvair power packs and have never removed the oil filter adapter, the 66-69 type manual trans is a inch longer and does make it tight, you just need to get the right angle and the wiggle with your jiggle and it will come out! glad the cradle worked for you, I get emails all the time from people who love them and makes me feel good I have made it easier for people to work on their corvairs! smoking smiley

Phil posted these pics a while back that show the correct placement.

Another 3 inches up on the rear and it would of cleared, but I run out of floor jack reach to lift car up. I had already put a 4x4 on the floor jack to get more lift. Guess I could have lifted the rear of the car with the engine hoist and then set the jack stands.

To get more lift I use my engine hoist. Attached to the rear motor mount mounting bolts. Gives you all the clearance you will need.

Thanks for the air time Dave.

Ended up returning the #800 jack.

They are "Made in China" junk.

Wheels were way to small IMNSHO.

Some of the H/F stuff is okay.

But some H/F stuff is not okay.

#2000 H/F jack seems mostly OK.

Mine is working fine. BUT it is the second one. I bought the first one in 2010. 3 months later, it would not hold up under a load. Took it back and got another. So 8 years later and still working fine, I'd say I got a good one on the second try. As reported earlier, 50% are usually returned for the same reason.

Today, my jack is helping out my friend JT with a gas tank pull from a 2007 Explorer.

No my 1000 lb lift table from HF is a another story. I can jack it up with no load and it goes down fairly quickly. Had the short block on it and it took about 10 minutes to drop 3 inches. But it is to late to take it back. I will have to reseal it myself.

Where do you guys buy the seals and stuff to rebuild the jacks. I've got one that leaks around where the handle attaches to jack it up.

In fact I have 3 that leaks in the same area, just never tried to find seals to fix them!

Thanks

Usually just normal O-rings... local hardware stores.

Harbor Freight and other hardware stores have kits of multiple sizes of O-rings. Pick the material and the sizes you need most. I have a Nitrile and Viton kits. If I don't have the one I need in those 2 kits, I will go looking for a specific sized o-ring. Plus I have o-rings I have saved over the years in a plastic bag.

Not a hydraulic expert by any means but I'd say if they're sealing the ram piston and pump with o-rings instead of quad rings, that could explain their failure rate.
