baked O rings
Posted by: gwrench ()

Today I changed pushrod tube and rocker stud O rings. I can see now why this engine was coated in oil and grime.

I expected the pushrod tube O rings to be baked, but the rocker stud O rings surprised me how hard they were. They were a pain to remove and some pieces went flying at high speed as I popped them out. It makes me wonder how hot this engine ran back in the day.

New pan gasket and oil cooler seals are on the way, is there anything else I should consider to stop potential oil leaks? I don't see anything obvious.

Make sure you get the "Viton" O rings. What they put in back in the 60's were CRAP! (The name escapes me..) Sounds like you got a good handle on the problem tho. maybe Head gaskets too...

The original black rubber O-rings would last a few thousand miles, then begin their deterioration. The would shrink, harden, crack and leak. Replacement of them was considered "maintenance". In the late 1960s Viton became easily available in the sizes needed for the Corvair. They are much more durable, and remain flexible and stable at high temperatures.

We are spoiled!

I can't tell you how many baked and cripsy o-rings I have changed with no harm to the engine.

Back in the early days they used Buna-N and then later Nitril o-rings.

The thing you need to keep in mind is how they cure rubber. How do they cure rubber? They heat it to around 250 degrees and keep it there for a certain amount of time then remove the tire, o-ring or whatever rubber part it is.

The 250 temp is approximate but pretty close. Do you know what temperature the Corvair engine runs at normally? How about 350 for the average running temp! So every time you run the Corvair engine for any length of time you are curing the rubber o-rings. What happens to rubber if you cure it for a long time? It basically turns to plastic, aka your crispy o-rings! No harm is ever done to the engine! Unless you run it out of oil.

The first published article on Viton Orings for the Corvair was published in the August, 1971 edition of the Windmill. Written by G.Paul Jones of the CORSA Southern California Club and had done a tech tip presentation on Viton Orings to the club.

At the time a set of Viton Orings cost $6.00 and GM part set was $1.80

No reason in the world NOT to use Viton, except for lack of knowledge.

When they, the originals, come out of turbo head they are closer to glass than plastic.

Viton has been the default for the past 45 years.

Nitrile/Buna N etc works fine - provided - it doesn't get overheated after it ages. Remeber that GM's head engineer didn't understand the O ring problem - Probably because when they did their testing age was not a factor.

By the time Viton O-rings became available I had been sealing GM O-rings with an early form of black RTV windshield sealer. Years later I would pull some of those engines apart and the o-ring would be rock hard but RTV around it was the still supple and sealing.

Oil leaks on Corvairs was mainly due to the "bean counters" employed by the General (followed by the bean counter owners).

I offer two versions. Choose the one you like,

Baked O Rings 1

Preheat oven to 350°
Place selected O Rings on cookie sheet with a rim.
You can mix Buna-N with Neoprene but stay away from Viton and Silicone
Spread your favorite SAE 30 oil onto the O-rings and toss to coat
Bake in oven until crisp

eye popping smiley

Baked O Rings 2

Preheat oven to 500° to get stone hot
Place purchased pizza on pizza peel
Place cut black olives onto pizza
Add more Mozzarella cheese
Slide pizza off peel and onto oven stone
Bake until golden brown on top

Um good.grinning smiley

Yes, the Buna-N and Neoprene o-rings can be like glass with no engine damage. Replaced many. Replace with Viton, live long and prosper. smileys with beer

Strange you mentioned this! I'm doing oring replacement on my 60 engine, now.
What I found was what you mentioned. Previous PO did just that on the rocker studs orings.
He didn't do it on all just the ones that where leaking!

A piazza peel is the large usually wooden spatula like object used to move pizzas in and out of the ovens. Living about as far away from NYC area (still the only place with decent pizza) you are forgiven for not knowing the term.
