1966 & 1967 COPO Corvair Yenko Stinger Information

1966 & 1967 COPO Yenko Stinger Fisher Body Tag info & Body Numbers

The original Central Office Production Order for 100, 1966 Corvair 140hp Corsas was the key step in getting the Corvair approved to be able to race in SCCA sanctioned events in D Production as a Yenko Stinger. The Fisher Id tag is significant in proving that the Corvair body associated with The YS tag is the original COPO body.

A few things to verify as to what should or should not be on a 1966 COPO Fisher Trim tag

12A Date code of stamped in upper left hand corner as built in the 1st week of Dec 1965.

E Interior code stamped in upper right hand corner for Black painted interior surfaces

TRIM 758 for black bucket seats

STYLE 66-10737 WRN for 1966 Corsa Coupe built at Willow Run Assembly Plant

BODY Between 2699 & 2814 (This is a span of 115 bodies, so it would appear that 15 180hp Corsa coupe bodies were also built as the Stingers bodies were being assembled. In theory, the range for the Stingers could change if a BODY lower or higher is found and verified)

PAINT C-C – Ermine white exterior paint

ACC line should only be completely BLANK, nothing else should be stamped on the ACC line of the Fisher Tag. There were very specific options included with the COPO order, they just were not stamped on the ACC line of the tag. Al of the 66 COPO Stingers came from the factory with HD suspension, Fast Ratio Steering, 4 speed trans, special dual master brake cylinder, and either a regular option 3.55:1 rear end or special order 3.89:1 of which 50 of the cars received.

The current documented VIN range starts with 107376W130567 to 107376W132422. With this large of a span, it is hard to determine with any accuracy how many VIN’s may exist above or below this range, but 73 of the VIN’s are documented publicly with the remaining VIN’s most likely residing with the original paperwork and not available to the general public.

For the 1967 Stingers there was a Central Office Production Order for 25, 1967 Corvair Monza Coupes. The Fisher Id tag is significant in proving that the Corvair associated with The YS tag is the original body.

A few things to verify as to what should or should not be on a 1967 COPO Fisher Trim tag

02C Date code stamped in upper left hand corner as built the 3rd week of February 1967.

4 Interior code stamped in upper right hand corner for black painted interior surfaces

TRIM 758 for black bucket seats

STYLE 67-10537 WRN for 1967 Monza Coupe built at Willow Run assembly plant

PAINT (R-R for Bolero Red Monza tags) or (F-F for Marina Blue Monza tags). Out of the 25 1967 COPO ordered Monza coupes, 14 were Bolero Red and 11 were Marina Blue.

BODY numbers Between 7633 & 7649 for the Bolero Red Bodies and Between 7647 & 7660 for the Marina Blue Bodies, the BODY numbers of 7647, 7648, and 7649 have not been located so they could be either Red or Blue and are the reason for the number overlap.

ACC line should only be completely BLANK, nothing else should be stamped on the ACC line of the Fisher Tag. There were very specific options included with the COPO order, they just were not stamped on the ACC line of the tag. All of the 67 COPO Stingers came from the factory with special ordered 140 hp engine, HD suspension, Fast Ratio Steering, 4 speed trans, & 3:89.1 gear ratio.

All 25 were made on the same day, went down the line the same time, and share a documented VIN range of known lowest VIN 105377W120086 to highest known VIN of 105377W120136. This is a span of 50 cars so they shared the line with other Corvairs spaced in between.

It is interesting to note that the 25 Stinger Bodies were made over a week before the engines. In normal production it is frequently seen that the engines are made well in advance of the bodies and this would indicate there was a backlog in getting the 140 special order engines prepared and actually held up the completion of the COPO Stingers.

1966 & 1967 COPO Yenko Stinger engine date code

The current presumed correct date code engine case ID’s for a 1966 COPO Yenko Stinger would be T1202RB, T1203RB, T1206RB, or T1207RB for a 1966 140hp Corsa engine with manual transmission.

As “correct” 1966 COPO Yenko Stinger engine date codes go, the earliest date I have in my records is Thursday, Dec 2nd 1965 and the latest is Tuesday Dec 7th of 1965. There would not be any date coded 12/4 (Sat) or 12/5 (Sun) as there wasn’t any work on the weekend. So until a documented Stinger with an engine date earlier than 12/2 or later than 12/7 surfaces, we can surmise that all 100 of the 140hp RB engines were built in 4 days consisting of 12/2, 12/3, 12/6 & 12/7.

The 1967 COPO engine code is a little simpler. It would appear that all 25 1967 RM 140hp Monza with manual transmission engines were all built on the same day. The presumed engine code for all 25 COPO engines would be T0306RM or Monday March 6th, 1967. This could change if one any of the missing COPO bodies show up and is verified with a different engine date code of either T0303RM or T0307RM.

Excellent summary of the important information about Don Yenko's first Performance cars built, Rick. Thank you!
It was an outstanding effort on the part of everyone at Yenko Chevrolet to get the initial 100 cars ordered, delivered and prepped by the deadline given by the SCCA to allow the Yenko Stinger to become a registered vehicle for Class D Production racing.
An amazing part of Corvair history!!

This is a section of a 3 section write up I was doing. I really like feedback from posting online as it generally stimulates open discussions and fact checks before it goes into " a permanent record" LOL...

I plan on posting the other two segments here as well in order to get more discussion flowing.

The other two sections will be initially titled...

What is... or what make a Stinger a Stinger...

and

Corvair Yenko Stinger Production 66-69, how many are left to find?

A Stinger tag makes a Stinger a Stinger.

Thanks for the feedback, is there any factual information that I could clarify or change to improve the accuracy or validity of my post on how to identify a COPO body (via the Fisher Tag) as ordered by Don Yenko for the 66 & 67 Yenko Stingers?
