Well, my Hopkins Aimer worked fine this morning. Donna & I got lights on the car adjusted this morning. We will check them out tonight to make sure they are right with 2 people in the car.

She had to do the vertical adjustment while sat in the car. My weight is a bit more than hers, which will affect the light aiming.

You had 1/2 tank of gas in it too, right?
I've been scouring the internet and see 2 distinctly different models. On has 2 meters and the other has 3 dials. From what I can see the 3 dial one is the newer design.
Now that you are done with yours you should sell it to me...

I have the newer B4A model. I also got the light intensity meter with my setup. Low beams are illuminating at 4 and high beams are illuminating at 9. Or 8k lumens and 12k lumens.

Sorry, Joel. I have 2 other Vairs to check and also our Camaro. It will be staying with us for awhile.

Pulled the rear seat and cardbboard liners from the car to add more soundproofing. At the same time, the satin black paint has been repainted to get rid of all the scratch marks on the cardboard and seat metal trim.

The steering gear box races and bushings have been installed. Assembly of the traveling nut, balls and shaft is completed and installed into box. We will finish box assembly tomorrow.

We drove the car tonight to check headlight alignment. Minor adjustment to left low beam was made to bring it more toward the left tire travel lane. Bezels to be installed tomorrow.

Check the bushing fit. I normally have to hone the bushing to get the pitman shaft to fit. Also make sure the shaft will fit all the way in. The last one I did was much tighter all the way in vs in the middle.

That is where I stopped last night. The pitman shaft won't go in. Thanks for the info.

Yesterday, I applied Dynamat to package shelf area and r ear seat back area. Used 1/2" aviation sound proofing material on the rear seat floorboard area.

Donna and I reinstalled the package tray cardboard, side cardboards and the rear seat. She cleaned the interior up for our drive today.

I also rewired my electric fuel pump system as the low oil pressure light was not coming on with turned to on. Light is now coming on when key is turned on. I will have to redraw my fuel pump schematics to fix the error in them.

The Vair got 180 miles in today. Only one issue. Engine would not idle this afternoon for the last 40 miles of the trip. After a few times stalling, we noted the electric fuel pump was not making its ticking noise. So it looks like the pump does not like to work when it is hot. I don't know how old the pump is but it looked like it had some time under the car but not an excessive amount.

First thing tomorrow will be to jack the car up and get it replaced.

Next will be to drain the oil and change the filter. 500 miles have been driven since we last changed the oil and filter. So it is time to see what we have in the filter.

Rick advised that if engine was still running then the pump was too. Probably some trash got into the carbs. I changed the fuel filter and did the little procedure he recommended (cover each carb with hand to starve it for air and accelerate engine to move more fuel and dislodge any item hampering proper operation.) It seem to run better in the car port, but next road trip will tell me more.

Drained the oil and replaced the filter. Found the reason for the leaking drain plug. PO used a spring wire to repair the threads. It failed to work after the test stand temp sender was removed. Removed oil pan and replaced it with a good pan with a good drain plug nut plate. I also got to see the bottom of the pan after 8 hours of stand running and after 500 miles. Not much to see in the pan. Some tiny glitter particles and some hard grease/carbon bits. We will open up filter tomorrow to see what it has inside.

Still have an issue with the heater blower fan speed operation. No low and medium and high are same speed. I will be doing some ohm checks on the fan switch, resistor and the wiring to locate the problem.

Added a directed wired 12 volt accessory plug tied to ignition on circuitry to supply power for my phone charger and other electronics I will be having in the car.

Engine still stalls when stopping and no sound of pump running. We will now change the pump.

Cut the oil filter open and found nothing of significance in the folds of the filter media. Next filter change in 3000 miles.

Donna and got onto the electric fuel pump replacement this afternoon. Finally got it installed and tested. Vair started right up with no issues. I can't hear this pump running. But I don't expect to hear it since I have wrapped the pump in rubber foam within the clamp and put a 1/4 thick piece of rubber between the mount and the structure. We felt the pump while the engine was idling and it was beating like a heart. The idle also sounds much better. There is no hesitation when I slowly accelerate from idle either.

I think the stalling issue is fixed. I will check it out next week more. Time to put the Vair away and get the RV ready for a trip.

Question: The 1966 steering box I rebuilt only goes 4 full turns stop to stop. I never checked it before I tore it down. Is this a typical gearbox or a something unique. I expected to see at least 5 turns.

I made a decision today that I would not install the quick steer box on the More Door. I will save the quick steer box for my coupe. Donna would be more comfortable maneuvering with the standard box and the larger tires.

I have a 65 steering gear box with about 68k that I will take apart and clean up. I will install new races and bushings in it. When I am ready for the input shaft, I will pull the box out of the More Door and take it apart to get its input shaft. This is hoping that shaft ball running area and gear teeth are in great condition.

I took the More Door out for a run this afternoon. It was back to its normal self again. Good acceleration without down shifting at 50 mph with smooth application of pedal. Idles without stalling now also. This pump can not be heard while driving or idling.

Well, I hit a dead end with the 65 steering box. You look at the photos and tell me what I already know.

I will be looking for another 66 steering box or a 66 input shaft and Pittman shaft for rebuilding this one. Anyone got any of these parts. I will post a separate post for these parts

I don't really want to pull my coupe apart this early to steal its gearbox because I do not know what its condition will be.
