Goodyear finished with the car. Balanced tires as tire bounce was also present. 3 tire were out of balance.

Now I need to fix the steering. The steering box is the only thing bad in the front suspension/steering items. I have a steering box, but it is dry. Got to decide if I want to try to inspect and fill with lubricant or replace with a Clark's steering box.

Going to take it home and change front shocks and redo brakes and axle bearings on front.

I thought that I knew a little something about Corvairs; but I am often humbled by the more accomplished experts on this site.

Some interesting thoughts on adjusting headlights but it doesn't work and the pictures don't follow the instructions. They have you start out 10-15 feet away and then move the car either farther away or closer depending on what your manufacturer recommends. They gave a range of 25 to 3 feet. Someone even asked about it and they gave an answer that really didn't help.
I'm guessing based on the pictures they want you to start 10-15 inches away instead of feet.
Wouldn't 3 feet away have them pointing at the ground and 25' have them much higher?
I think it will be a good way to do it once I get the distance and difference for the high beams sorted out.
Thanks!

For our Vair cars I've always "measured" the lights marked the wall and moved back 25 ft.

I am lucky. I am going to take Rick's Vair and use it to set wall Mark's. Then put my Vair in place of his at the 20 foot location and adjust my car's lights up.

Printed instructions from FAQ link to rebuild the Saginaw steering box. We will tear it down first to see if it is worth buying a rebuild kit for it.

The lights on the car are tilted so far down that making the initial setup marks will be impossible. That is why I will use Rick's car for the initial setup. I will verify front fender height when each car is in the 205 foot away position. I will make sure front fender heights are very close before final light settings are made.

On our 4 light setup

low beams are below the horizontal line... High's are above.

Pass. side low is on vertical line and Drivers to the right .

Inside / highs are Driv. side to left of vertical ... Pass. side on the V. line.

Most state law is DIM highs when on-coming vehicle is 500 ft away..

350ft when approaching from the rear.

I have always switched from High Beam to Low Beam the moment I see oncoming headlights, or when I initially see tail lights as I come up from behind.

This way I am less likely to blind other drivers.

While I am aware that technology is making automotive headlights brighter, I also realize my eyes are also becoming more sensitive to bright lights as I get older.
At this point in my life, I am beginning to drive less in the dark if I have a choice. The brightness seems to be more and more distracting to me.

I was surprised last year when I read the 500' rule in Texas. Seems way too close to me.

Started cleaning and teardown of the used 66 steering gearbox I have. Used a wire wheel to clean all the rust and grime off the housing and steering shaft. Applied Rust Fix to apply a coating until it is is rebuilt, where it will be painted. Removed steering arm and bead blasted it. Had to use pulled, ball peen and heat to slowly slide it off.

Removed end cap and found lots of gdease in it. Not dry, so will be looking to find item making grating feel while it ie turned.

Car has been parked since Wednesday as many other life priorities had to be handled. But I have received will the LED bulbs for the car. These will nbe done in due time.

Check the inner and outer races for the caged ball bearings. The 2 inner races are part of the worm shaft.

I will be cleaning and checking everything. This box came out of a 66 Monza 4 door that sat in a dealer's field since the early 80s. Don't know what will be found in it seeing it has 68k miles and 35 years of non-use. How many years in a rusted out car is unknown. Take close note of the steering shaft. Heaving rust pits. I work like to find a better one, but I suspect that would be a mission of futility.

Completed the disassembly and cleaning today. Only thing that I could contribute to the grating feeling of the shaft when turned was the upper ball bearing assembly grease was oil instead of grease. Seems the grease had disintegrated back somewhat to its natural components. Lots of oil with the grease in this box.

I polished up all the external ball guides to a shiny luster to ensure I had no pitted parts. Got to get inside the traveling nut and polish up those ball guides tomorrow. I will go ahead a buy a kit with races. Might as well change races and ball bearing sets and have a almost new unit.

I had a bunch of grit from media blasting in the column bearing by the directional switch. That sounded and felt terrible.

Order kit for the steering gear box. We will have it next week. Also ordered new ignition switch to replace the NOS switch I took out of the engine test stand.
