Disc brake kit will be here Monday.

Checked my spare hub already modified for corvair Underground disc brakes and 1/2 wheel studs will fit my wheels. Just need to see if same mod is the one for Clark's kit. I have the paperwork for the mod, so the check will be done this weekend.

Ordered a set of 10 Moser 1/2-20 with 0.530 knurl to modify the hubs coming off the More Door. I have the reamer to set up new size properly. My spare hubs needs to be common for the Coupe and More Door.

Looking for brake fluid resistant paint now for the MC and calipers. Hate the rust look. Eastwood it seems doesn't stock the brake gray paint any more. Only available in New Zealand anymore. Looks like VHT Caliper Paint is the beast without paying $60 a 12 oz spray can for the only other product that does a good job.

VHT is not $10 anymore thanks to last 2 years. Doubled in price since 2019. VHT caliber paints only say resistant to chemicals. Never resistant to brake fluid. But it is the best we have now Eastwood doesn't have their brake gray paint and I don't want to pay $60 for a can of ERA paint.

Need new axle seal p/n for the hubs since these are 5 years in service (12 years since purchase).

I went looking for the LM front axle seals in the FAQs and didn't locate them. I knew I had posted the info quite a while back, so I did a search and found the discussion.

Here is the link for the other member doing the LM brake work. It also has the bearing p/ns for the hubs.

Yes but the red VHT is still $15 at Autozone and is in stock. You could use Gray POR, brake fluid or gas won't touch that stuff.

Red in a Gray trunk. Not my idea of color coordinating. I will see if I can find some gray or black VHT Caliper paint.

I have my 1/2-20 lug nuts (set of 10) and front hub seals 8705S on order. I should have all parts I need headed my way.

I think I have 2 or 3 turned front drums I will take to Helen also. NOS drums have been spoken for.

You could use Silicone Brake Fluid.
It doesn't eat paint on contact.

Mel:

Too much added hassle, time and cost to change out the rear components and flushing out all the lines. Probably wouldn't be ready for Springfest in 4 weeks. Cutting it close doing a disc brake upgrade as it is.

Disc Brake kit arrived today. Caliper paint ordered for MC and calipers.

Everything setup with machinist to have hubs in his possession on Wednesday. Looks like assembly will happen this weekend.

I got the car jacked up and wheels off. Pulled drums. Figured no harm to see brakes operate with rubber bungee cords wrapped around the shoes for the last time. Right shoes both moved and both wheel cylinder rods moved smoothly.

BUT, Left rear shoe did NOT move at all when pedal was pushed to the floor. Wheel cylinder rod did NOT move. Front shoe and rod moved smoothly. This says so much for honing and putting in new seals a year ago in chinese cylinders. Their cheap steel still rusts in service.

Glad I am getiing rid of this system.

Hubs pulled and studs removed. Cleaned off most grease. Ready for trip to macinst. I noted the red bearing grease was noticably black. I should have repacked the bearings after overheating the brakes, following the Tail of the Dragon trip. Tip to other who may overheat their brakes - Inspect your bearings and repack if necessary.

Post some pics of the LR wheel cylinder internals. Your car AL, but now that you have gone this far, I would think about flushing the lines with denatured alcohol and blowing them at, then add DOT 5. Mine has been in since 1995 not rust or pitting of any kind. I did change it out for fresh when I replaced the hoses last year, but that was grabbing at straws.

I would think about DOT 5, if I had brake work to do on the rear wheel cylinders at this time. That is a lot of work to access them to clean all the DOt 3 out of the cylinders and reassemble the brakes. Pain in the butt to get those small 3/8 bolts out, as you know. Should have put DOT 5 in when I redid all the brakes in 2018. Too late now to feel bad about the lost opputunity.

I have removd both sets of brake assemblies and boxed them up for the trip to Helen. I hope they sell, because I don't feel like traipsing them around the southeast for a few years trying to sell the complete sets. I have some cylinder rebuild kits that will be added to the packages. Some unturned front drums with lots of meat left in them that also be taken. Don't need the drums anymore.

Painted the MC and caliper brackets. My friend Rick located the Eastwood Brake Gray paint I loaned him 3 years ago. Still 3/4 full and spraying. Still enough to do the new MC for my Coupe with disc brakes.

Ordered some front springs. The ones I put on late last year to replace the sagging ones have now joined the seniors club and lowered the front end back to where it is given scubbing noises in the spring pockets on bumps.

Ok, here is a photo of the wheel cylinders. Past history is the cylinders were honed and new seals installed: left - December 2021, right - March 2022. So now you know why I am getting tied of fixing brakes on the car.

The left cylinder has chrome plated pistons with chrome plating flaking off. The right pistons are stainless.

Well that sucks, I re-read your post, I read it as the left rear was stuck the first time, not the left front secondary shoe. Thats why I said flush the rears. Are you always using brake fluid from a fleshly opened container? The only time I ever had something like that happen was when I borrowed my buddies power bleeder that had brake fluid in it was a couple of years old.

J.O.

Like most people, I have a bottle of DOT 3 fluid that is kept securely closed. I even put a piece of plastic then cap it to keep air out. I can't afford to keep buying DOT 3 every time I do brake maintenance. The only thing I could have done better was drained the reservoir each time I worked on each wheel cylinder. But how many mechanics do that on their cars.

I have to re think rear brakes since the front springs ahead black grease, where red ge0rease was used back in 2108 when they were rebuilt. I have a set of spare rear axles ready to go in.

Any way hubs and rotors are at the machinist. Caliper paint purchased. Bought replacement MC for my Coupe.

It has been a rt front swerve issue I have been working on since December 2021. First left front brake issue, that I identified by fender not dropping. Then decided 4 months later to go after rt front brake, since it was still present to some extent. Thought I had it fixed but it kept creeping back. Fix one thing, then another, than n other and another. This was the time to give up on system and go with newer tech.

Donna and I are at breakfast in town discussing the car, brakes and wheel bearing grease. Decision made, rear will be jacked up, rear axle assembles removed, new AC Delco wheel cylinders installed on spare rear axles. The spare axles will be installed with new brakes and DOT 5 fluid. Hope we can make Helen with the car.

Good plan Al, I stopped worrying about the price of brake fluid when the Workhorse Bounder brakes started acting up. It takes over 3 quarts of the best high temp DOT 3 that I can find. It gets changed every 2 to 3 years depending on how much time I spend in the mountains. My family and dog deserves it.

As for your left front, the rear or secondary shoe moving has almost nothing to do with forward stopping, but it will stop the self adjusters from working when you back up eventually making it much less effective than the right. Especially when you first hits the brakes.

I have made some of my best decisions at breakfast.

So you are saying the secondary (rear) shoe was not causing the right swerve issue with the car. Any ideas with all I changed what could be the source of the issue. Changed drums, shoes, hoses, rebuilt wheel cylinders, lubricated slip pads, checked fluid flow to both cylindersat hard line before hooking up new hose.

I was under the understanding the front shoe energized the rear shoe to get full braking on the wheel. If the left front cylinder isn't able to get rear piston out to the drum, then front show can't energize the rear shoe operation. Therefore insufficient left front braking action.

The front shoe pushes the rear shoe fully against the anchor and the piston is fully retracted during forward braking. When you stop while going backwards the rear piston and shoe move forcing thee front or primary against the anchor which then causes the shoe to move in that direction causing the self adjuster to actuate. You were stopping in reverse using the front shoe. No self adjusting was taking place. Eventually, actually not all that long, the left side became much looser than the right and caused the right which was working to do the majority of the forward braking, I would guess this would be more pronounced when you first hit the brakes. Once you have full pressure on a long stop for a while there is time for it to normalize to some extent.
