More info on the rear camber vibration and issues.

The inner control rod brackets are the ones that came with the car. I have several sets of brackets from LMs I scrapped. I will find best set that fit snug to the differential housing. Something has got to be fixed to bring the tire in at the bottom to get camber within specs without using all the adjustment on both sides. It looks like front bushings were replaced by PO some years earlier since bolts have not really rusted and rubber is not cracked. I will post a photo of the front bushing on each side tomorrow. Maybe someone can see something there.

Maybe there is something with the drums or driveshafts, but driveshafts were changed out a few months ago returning original shafts back to car with new universals. Issue was there before engine work with original drums and driveshafts and is still there. Guess taking them off and having them balanced would be next along with the drums. Rechecking of the rear axle assembly will also be undertaking.

Not going to blame any more tires after watching them on the machine.

Al, what does the -0.12 and -0.23 represent? Degrees?

For most of us to relate.... put a level vertical against the tire and tell us where the Bubble lays.... We can convert that into degrees.

The tires on my Malibu look fine on the balancer and will zero balance but they still shake. You could take them somewhere that has a road force balancer and see what it tells you but first swap them front to rear and see if the vibration moves with the tires.

Something odd is going on with the alignment. The only time you should run out of adjustment is when the bushings are shot.

Left rear is on fro t and new tire in on right rear. Like I said. I am done with tires. Vibration changes when 2 men are in car.

Bodies are big vibration dampers and sprung weight. Both will lessen vibration.
Springs are not the cause of vibrations. They can only store and transmit.
Vibrations in cars are imbalances in rotating parts. Since you have eliminated tires and wheels by moving them it has to be something that rotates that wasn't moved. A drum that is out of balance won't get better when you turn it. Probably worse but I've never run across a drum that caused a vibration.
I would be betting on a bent half shaft or axle at this point.
You could jack up the rear, take off the wheels, put the lug nuts back on to hold the drums and run it up to speed to see if you can see what is vibrating or maybe even run it slow to see if you can see something bent.

Joel:

Thanks for the idea on how to check out the rear axle parts next in isolating the issue. We have a couple parades in the next month, so I may hold off any investigation until those are done. I have some driveshafts I can build up. I will straight edge them before I install universals. I will get them balanced and have them ready for install.

Just sent a set of driveshafts to Powertrain. They are specialists in driveshafts. They will ensure shafts are straight, recondition to new looking, install new universals and balance the shafts. That should eliminate the driveshafts.

I have pulled out another set of turned drum to use, if needed. I think I will swap drums first, since issue is on right side. Rear bearing assembly will be checked out when driveshaft is removed.

Got to clean up garage before anything else. Too much has gone on in past 3 weeks and it is disorganized. Between suspension work on 2 Vairs, tearing apart 4 front suspension and 2 rear suspensions, helping Rick with his new 65 More Door, I have tools and materials scattered everywhere.

Picked up my rebuilt and balanced driveshaft from Powertrain yesterday. They look good. From rusted shafts to pretty gloss black shafts with new universals and balance weights where there were none previously. Will work installing on them and swapping the drums next week. One at a time to isolate the residual vibration in the car.

Gave up on the strobing brake/turn signal LED bulbs this morning. They were strobing again with no lights activated while driving around backyard testing out parade decorations security. Installed standard 1157 LED bulbs. They work fine.

We have the More Door back up on jack stands. Pulled driveshafts and drums in prep for replacing due to vibration issue. While up on stands, a couple other items will be addressed. One will be replacing the TV lever we brazed back together. Another will be replacing PG pan that required o-rings under bolts. It has to be bent to keep it from allowing gasket to fully contacting for sealing the pan. I will also redo master cylinder lines to be similar to production late model dual installation. Currently the dual master lines are forward of the MC which exposes them to being damaged.

I inspected rear axles today. Found a wheel cylinder leak on the left side. Theses rear axles bearing assemblies cylinders were installed on my Coupe 10 years ago and never had brake fluid in the system since installation. Cylinder looks clean, but it will be honed and rebuilt. I have a rebuild kit on hand, so it will be rebuilt after first of the year.

Axles were hand rotated and right side had a growling noise and feeling. These bearings were installed 1100 miles ago. A set of super saver bearings. Disassembly revealed outer bearing had end damage to each of the rollers. Plenty of fresh grease, so an unusual failure. Left side had a little in/out play, so it was removed to investigate. Outer bearing discovered to have a radial mark around the center of the race. Bearings were in car when I got in it 2009. Both assemblies will be rebuilt with National bearings. No more super saver bearings.

Don't believe the axle assemblies issues are contributing to the vibration in the right rear at 62 mph & above. It does explain the light howl I picked up in the right rear 10 days ago during parade weekend.

Parts have been received to rebuild rear axle assemblies. Will do them in a couple weeks. Also will rebuild the ones that came with the car and have been stored almost a year.

Other tasks around home have taken priority.

This is the wiring schematic for the internally regulated alternator, as set up on this 66 Monza 4 Door. My test stand is also similar, except it does not use a GEN light. My coupe will eliminate the harness kit.

Had to go back and recheck a wire. Will post corrected copy soon.

Last 2 days, I have cleaned, bead blasted and painted most of the Couple's small suspension pieces.

I have been looking for new rear coil spring rubber bump stops. Clarks doesn't have them and all I find are smaller versions of the stop. Vair stops are 1.75" x 1.75" conse style stops. Best I can find are 1.625" h x 1.5" d. I will continue my search. Not really looking for NOS rubber ones, but would use them if available, if necessary.

Fixed a gas leak on the electric pump. The filter started weeping from the male thread section where it is swaged into end cover. Replaced with another filter I had.

Modified trunk left close out panel, where Jack handle is stored. Added a bolt washers and lock nut to panel. Jack will be pinched on it to keep it from rattling around in trunk.

It got a little warmer today. So I cleaned the rear axle pieces and painted them. Everything is now ready to set shim requirements and then to lube & assemble.
