For the courtesy lights, how did you deal with the polarity issue? I been led to believe the "case" is hot on those?

I have a set of Greenlee punches if one was the right size it would make a nice hole in seconds.

I have chassis punches but didn't think they could punch through the housing steel.

Here is photo of factory option drivers side courtesy light. Orange is hot wire to light switch which is tied to fuse box also. Orange goes to center. Glovebox is only bulb I know of that positive goes to case. Still waiting for someone to come up with a LED bulb source for that location.

Just finished making a switch bracket to replace 2 brackets that held the emergency parking brake light and the momentary fuel pump switch. The way the 2 brackets look on the right is the way the dash structure had them looking when installed. I did not like that cock-eyed look. I will make another for my coupe.

They are made to punch through electrical boxes. I would think the tail light housing would be thinner but I haven't compared them.

thanks, that wasn't clear from the schema..., ah, wiring diagram I was viewing.

What was your source for the #90 LED? many that I find online have a BA15D base. I haven't found one with a single contact.

Thanks!

AzDave:

Here are the photos of the test we did with the LM clear and smoke lenses. Bulbs are JDM switch back 100w white / 7w Amber. clear lens on left and smoke lens on right.

The illumination taken by the camera is no accurate. Color and intensity is not represented in the photos. You have to really see LED bulbs in action at night in person.

For the tail lights, the movement of the sockets from angled up to horizontal doubles the range the light beam can be seen. The intensity of the beam goes further out significantly also. So modifying your housing to put plug and play bulbs in is a worthwhile effort. Then you have a world of spares available to you compared to unique led panels that fit in the lens area.

Here you go, Larry. Fits in the license Plate light area, so your courtesy light is your spare to get you home without a ticket.

Thanks!

Taking true-to-life photos of LEDs like that is always tough.
You probably saw this video comparison I did for bulbs and lenses.

I hadn't seen it, Dave. But I will go and watch it.

For those wondering what we are going to do with the lower hole, we have a solution. We have a supply of 3/4" Knock Out Seals pn 49151 Donna bought from Lowe's. We will insert them from the inside to have the shiny side towards the bulb. A quick polish and we have the best we can get. A thin bead of sealant around it to keep engine air out and we will be good to go.

Installed the instrument panel (again). All systems work, so that is a plus. Photos show new bracket with fuel pump switch and emergency Park brake light installed. Second photo shows the floor illumination of the courtesy lights with 9 SMD LED bulbs.

So the More Door is ready for participating in the Jesup, GA Veteran's Day Parade on Saturday.

I removed the front park light assemblies thinking I could clean them up. Wrong. Too much corrosion. So I took the ones I set up for LED bulbs and hooked them up to see if they would operate. Park lights work but no directional. Removed original flasher and installed new electronic flasher. Attached ground of new flasher to dash structure. Tried front turn light and it worked. Installed replacement front parking light assemblies.

Then I decided that I might as well install LED bulbs in rear of car. So out came the incandescent bulbs in both tail/stop/turn, both back ups and the license plate light. LEDs were installed and started having issue with both tail lights and brake lights. This is a new harness installed in February, so I was not going to blame it right away. Swapping bulbs was first task. Determined after troubleshooting that it was the sockets on the new harness at fault. The ground terminals were not making good enough contact with the housing. Adjusted ground terminals where they would make better contact and issues were resolved. I still have to replace housings with the modified housings. So these bulbs are in the angled location.

Photo of the front park lights is from 26 feet away. Bulbs are the JDM white/amber switchback bulbs.

Photo of the rear tail/license is from 14 feet away. Bulbs are the red strobe brake turn bulbs. License plate light has the 9 SMD bulb used in courtesy light.

Changed the oil and filter today. Last Clark's filter in stock. I will put on a spin-on adapter next oil change. I have a AC Delco PF13 on the Coupe's engine, so I will find it or an equivalent, excluding Fram, for the next oil change.

Engine now has 2029 miles since being installed after the major rework.

We washed the Vair for the Veteran's Day Parade on Saturday. Also cleaned out the car of unnecessary items. Trunk was empty and I could tell the difference not having the 97 pounds in front. Only got to 60 mph on the 2 trips today.

Another 120 miles on the Vair.

No issues unless you call being stop by Fort Stewart MP for tail lights hyper flashing. Explained it away as the red strobe lights on the back when I ride brakes. He was very curious of the car. A young 24 year old MP. He took lots of photos of the Vair.

Donna took a video of the hyper flashing (6 pulses then a pause, then it repeats). It is with parking lights only turned on (my initial knowledge of the LED light issue). I did some quick troubleshooting after the parade. It occurs only when engine is running and parking lights(or headlights) are selected on. Completely disconnected alternator and electric fuel pump main power. Issue still present. Not present when engine is shut-off. I will do a few more checks tomorrow to see if ignition system is causing issue.

Turn signals do it also with engine running. I replaced rear bulbs with 1157 incandescent bulbs and it doesn't happen until brakes are applied (with or with out engine running). Brakes do it whenever applied.

Time to get it right or go back to incandescent bulbs. I never saw the issues as I never started the car during my checks nor applied multiple of lights on.

Lane, I have been "pulled over" several times by curious police officers.

After a quick check of paperwork (if even that much!) they start chatting about whatever old car of mine I am driving at the time.

Job boredom, male curiosity and automotive ignorance is a potent combo in some men; young and old!

I took the stops and conversations as a compliment; when I later had time to think about it.

P. S. Donna is still a saint.

Mark:

He had a valid reason to pull me over with the flashing tail lights. He thought it was a bad connection. He was doing his job to keep highway safe. Loved telling him about the car. He thought it was inheritance car. Informed I went to New Orleans 18 months ago and bought it. I think he took 20 photos. He couldn't get over all the neat LED lights on it and that I had wired them in.
