Oh come on Al.
We's just playin with ya.
It has been very interesting following your work on this car.
Keep showing us your progress, it inspires others to keep pluggin away on their's.

I think it is very admirable how well you and rnch were able to work together on what could have been an incident that created bitter enemies and made it work out so both of you walked away feeling good about the deal. thumbs up thumbs up

Johnny:

Most of progress was posted on the "What did you WORK ON / DO....to your Corvair today?" discussion in past few months.

I might make a synopsis on here to bring it together.

Today was front seats belts installation for trip to Maggie Valley and engine lid seal installation. We also polished and installed a used set of door sill plates to get rid of the corroded ones.

We found we have a water intrusion issue on the right front floorboard. Rocker plug pulled and rocker seem clear. Got to pull vent next.

Plans are to leave tomorrow morning with Truck, RV trailer and the Vair.

We just finished with the clean out of the area behind the vents. Found a large piece of metal, leaves, sealant and lots of dirt in right side. Left side had minimal leaves and dirt. Both sides now clean. Proper sealed vents. We found barely any sealant on one side of each vent.

What a car. Someone way back was just to busy, tired or didn't care to take care of items properly when they were pulled apart and reassembled.

We will clean out rockers after Maggie Valley.

The .More Door made the 350 mile trip with not an issue. Highest speed achieved was 73 MPH. We took long leisure trip due to pulling RV and having our Sugar.
So it took almost 8 hours.

Donna was the driver for the entire trip. Average fuel economy was 22 - 23 mph. Donna said it was good to drive and the Vair was getting lots of lookers. I think.they were looking at her.

Today was fix the engine day in Maggie Valley. The engine started cutting out yesterday on return trip to RV Park. Due to rain the night before, I suspected water got in the tank. Found locking gas cap not properly locked in place to seal tank and I had parked with filler side up. I got enough gas run through in the parking lot yesterday and thought I had it solved. But it started cutting out again on the climbing or descending hills.

Rick stopped by today and we pulled carb tops off and found water in one and some trash in the other. We pumped about 2 quarts of fuel out of the lines using the electric pump until water free gas was pumped out of engine lines. Seafoam was added to gas to assist breaking up any remaining water in the tank. Carb jets and passages were cleaned and settings checked and adjusted where necessary. He also check ignition spark again and found a weak spark from the new Blue Streak points. Installed a new set of points resolving the spark issue. Accelerator control rigging was adjusted to get full throw on carbs. This was something on list to do later. A run was made and Rick determined that timing could be set to 10 from 8 as we had no pinging. Engine timing was set at 10 degrees and another run made up the hill close by. No more issues with engine cutting out and engine had plenty of power to climb the hill.

Ready for events at Maggie Valley this weekend.

Thanks, Mel. We will. Hopefully Vair will perform quite well in Autocross with Rick driving and in the parade with Donna driving. I do the around town driving.

The car performed well in autocross, rally and parade.

A note regarding the points that were replaced Thursday. They were brand new Blue Streak points I bought at O'Reilly's. Only installed for 400 miles. Their wait pattern was only around the edge of the fixed contact, indicating the fixed contact was concave. No more Blue Streak points for me. The other points I had at home I tried use in bench setting up the distributor were from a Corvair Vendor. I could not set a gap less than .019. I checked rub block and it was. 0.256. The Blue Streak's rub block was 0.246.

I should have grabbed the Standard points I had in spares. Right now we have a set of points in it that has a solid fixed contact. I got them with the Greenbrier van. Got to be at least 15 years old. I also bought 5 sets of AC Delco points from a good vendor here in Maggie Valley. I'll use them until I get time to put in the TSP Distributor and coil.

Rick and I had to repair right front control strut rod bushing installation tonight. I tried to drive car last night and right front tire was rubbing lower front wheelwell trim/fender. This morning we discovered strut rod nut loose and half of rubber bushing missing. Suspect during autocross, nut backed off and movement cut bushing off. No parts with any of the Vair vendors at Vairs in the Valley. O'Reilly clerk order a corvette control arm kit instead of the Corvair front strut rod bushing kit we needed. I found some grommets and heater hose at O'Reilly's this evening. Rick used them to reset up rod. Rod will be replaced when we get home, as somehow nut came loose and damaged threads at end. Thinking alignment people didn't tighten it.

Engine has developed a miss again. I can only think we have picked up some water from premium gas we bought yesterday. No rain, but started issue right after the fill up. It ran fine though autocross and rally, but started a miss during parade. Fill up was just before parade. First fill up was Shell prior to Thursday repairs. Yesterday's fill up was Sunoco. Suspect they don't use much premium up here in the mountains. We are going to put dry gas in it and get it out of town. At half tank we will but some more on the interstate, where it is used frequently

Bummer about all the troubles...

On the miss... are you sure it's not a "lean" miss or an overheated sparkplug?

Cold engine and the miss is there right from start up. Don't believe is it is a lean miss as Rick set up carb again on Thursday and mentioned right carb was lean after the cleaning. He adjusted it out. If it isn't a miss, then I have a fouled plug. But it was running so well after the repairs on Thursday. I don't see how it could get fouled by sitting and doing the parade.

More door came home with no issues. Rick drove it the first 320 miles and Donna brought it home the last 30 miles. Averaged 23 MPG during trip with speeds held at 65 - 75 MPH on the interstate. 2 gas stops due to truck needing fuel towing RV.

Pretty bad when points and condensers won't last 500 miles. First set of points from tune up kit had no identification, so they had to be Chinese parts. the condenser was from the same tune up kit I purchased from a Vair Vendor and also no identification. The second set of points were new Blue Streak from O'Reilly's. Points now installed are unknowns but at least 15 years old and condenser is a new Blue Streak from O'Reilly's. I have a set of Clark's points that the rub block has to be filed down to get gaps less than .019. I have to check to see if I have any more from Clark's and check them.

AC Delco points will be used next (if needed) until I get wiring set up for the TSP Electronic Distributor and Coil.
