Put that one back together to put on a parts car to make it easier to move around when you steal the good box off of it.

They often get water in them. Bad input seal I suppose.

I have no parts car. This box came off a 65 I scrapped. It sat in a field 30+ years at the dealership. Then 4 years at my house.

So that is why I am going to look for the 2 parts for this box or a 66 box that is rebuidable.

I have a good lead on a 66 steering box. It is being checked for water intrusion. If none, I will get it.

Install sound proofing in rear fender wells and on engine lid.

Installed lighter Assembly in dash. It is a 1966 Impala Casco lighter. Same knob, so it matches when nothing else is in the receptacle. I couldn't see spending the cash for a Rochester assembly as it will only be used for plugging in electronics.

Installed door bumpers, trunk lid bumpers and engine lid bumpers yesterday.

Assembled a rear axle assembly for this car. I will do 2nd one on Sunday.

Then it will be time to exchange out rear axle assemblies and front hubs with new bearings/seals. Also install the new front brake assemblies including backing plates from our Monza coupe.

I will need to rebush rear control arms or get replacements. Bushings are all rotted out.

Donna & I assembled 2nd rear axle assembly today. Made sure we had a left and right backing plate. Still need change out studs to a longer stud for the rallye wheels.

Inspected fronts drums and backing plates with new brakes/cylinders to ensure all was ok for installations on this car. Hubs need studs changed out also.

Located bushing for rear control arms. Should have them in hand in about 10 days.

Received a 66 steering gearbox yesterday. Will go though it Tuesday.

Also received a 65 ashtray to use in the car. It doesn't have the ugly plastic handle on it.

Donna and I got the replacement steering gearbox torn down and cleaned up. Some minor pitting on the teeth but acceptable for use. Once all the grease is out of the housing, I will get to removing the old bushing. Bushing in cap will be done last.

Discovered I have all RH backing plates remaining for the 4 rear axles remaining to be built. Worked on finding a snap in metal cap to close off existing parking brake hole. No luck. Bolt 2 washers and a lock nut will be used to seal off existing hole.

2 of the backing plates have good wear on the wear points. Bad enough to prevent brake smooth movement. Area will be built up with brazing or welding and profiled to original contour.

Removed all the races and bushings fom the caps and housing. Bead blasted all the parts. Installation of parts are next.

Received a replacement PG shifter cable from Clark's. It started leaking a couple weeks ago. Only 740 miles on the cable. At least my clock arrived in time to be installed at same time dash is out for cable replacement. Replacement will happen after Helen. Not enough time left to get rest of tasks finished to take Vair to Helen.

Also we got another 65 ash tray bead blasted today. It will be painted black to match interior and installed. 65 ash trays look much better than 66s. 66s have an ugly large plastic handle.

We bought a NOS right rear wheel trim here in Helen. It will replace the one we left on a bridge in Mississippi when it blew bringing the car home. I had to drive to the bottom to the bridge to get a place to pull over. It was a 1999 radial tire that didn't like being driven 70 mph. And yes right paint was down to primer for a 12 inch square. It has been repainted and looks good for driver quality car.

Thank you.

Now I have to get the PG shift cable replaced. The new cable from Clarks has been improved on so we don 't get another leak. Rick got some Heat shrink from Aviation Spruce that is durable and has an adhesive on the inner surface. We applied it to the new cable Tuesday before the world fell apart on his engine. I'll post a photo later to show its application. We took a 4 foot section to Helen and it sold real quick to one person who wants to use it on his cars. I explained the 2 piece operation we used on our 3 cables tnat we did on Tuesday.

Thanks to Ken Hand for bringing his method and shrink heat size to my attention a few weeks ago.

Adhesive Lined Shrink Tubing is made of flame retardant, cross-linked polyolefin with an inner coating of hot-melt adhesive and an outer layer. It has excellent physical, chemical, and electrical properties and provides electrical and mechanical protection.

I thought it was about time i provided some history on the purchase and home return of this car. I bought car on March 29 last year. (Yep, Phil, it was me.) We put 4 spare tires, 2 gallons on oil, toolbox in the GMC truck and hooked up the tow dolly for the pickup. Drove the Hair from Mark's house. First gas at 120 miles. Burning fuel like crazy and oil. Lost a right rear due to blowout at 140 miles. Heard left rear tire (loud ticking noise like valve clatter but stopped when car stopped) going at 180 miles and pulled over before blowing. Both tires were 1999 tires like the front tires. Installed 1995 Sears radials each time on the rears. Got to Montgomery AL and engine would not stay running at stoplights. 3rd stoplight we put it on a dolly and towed it home. Drive started at 10:30 am New Orleans and ended at 5 am Ellabell Ga with a 3 hour nap in the truck in some small town southeast of Robins GA.

The 80 hp engine had a dropped seat on #2 exhaust. I knew that more work than just a head would have to be done on the tired engine. That is why I decided to build/repair a 110 hp engine instead of fixing the 80 hp.

Here is the link to the Sale discussion.

I was literally sick to my stomach after reading Lane's harrowing driving home email. I had heartburn for two days and slept badly each night.

The PO described the engine as "leisurely" and I just accepted it as that.

Due to knee surgery recovery issues, vinyl seats, no air conditioning and the hot and humid climate here in New Orleans, I doubt that I put 200 miles on the car the entire time I owned it. I honestly thought the engine was just stiff and balky from sitting up so much.

I came to the sad conclusion that I had unknowingly misrepresented the car and misrepresented myself after reading and re-reading the trip back to Georgia email.

I thought the only decent, honorable thing that I could do was to offer a partial rebate check on the purchase price; which Lane graciously accepted.

Though Mark offered a significant sum, I accepted enough to get the kits and materials to clean and rebuild the carbs, since they seemed to be the cause of the issues. The engine would either fast idle or not idle at all on the trip home.

Now after rebuilding the carbs and trying them on the 110 engine test stand, there is still something wrong with them. I suspect the idle circuit was cleaned out as good as it should have been. But the root cause of the miss I was experiencing in the 300 miles I did drive it towards home was not the carbs. It was the dropped valve seat. Repairing the 110 for the More Door gave me lots of engine experience for building my Big Valve Engine, whenever I get started on it. Got to get the Camaro interior in and finish up the Greenbrier so I can concentrate on the Coupe.

I consider Lane and his wife Donna "Good People" and was pleased to meet them and chat with them.

This situation could had easily brought on loads of ill will and turned out badly.

I know a little about Covairs, always learning from he various members of this website.

Lane obviously knows a LOT more about these cars than I do.

Yes, what Matt said. I have always heard,

Private Sale Used Car Warranty is described as follows . . . .

30 seconds or 30 feet, which ever comes first,
Warranty is non-transferable,
and prorated to the moment that purchase negotiations began.
Does not cover moving parts, or those parts that are attached to or supporting said moving parts.
Painted, upholstered, chrome plated or parts that are hidden from view are exempted from coverage under article 2, subsection 5, paragraph 3.
