Bring a trailer. AKA Corvair values
Posted by: markaxamit ()

Has anyone been tracking Corvair values? I get solicitations from "Bring a Trailer" but am really not in the market for any more Vairs. Some of the cars look pretty nice, (at least the photos do). But what are they really going for? Most of the Corvairs on Ebay never reach the reserve price.

Like Jay Leno said - they cost way more to restore than they are worth when finished.

I think that's why there are hundreds of "barn find" or "project" Corvairs for sale.

Iam looking for about 3 Years now, sometimes 10 hours a da sometimes the whole weekend,.

What i can shurly say is that The Corsas are not easy to find,

a Lot of Daydriver Automatik Cars you can get for 5.000+-2.000

Manuals Coupe 5.000-15000

Well Restored 10.000-20.000(not much)

Lakewood 7,500-15.000

Good Projekts 1.500-2.000

If you Lokk at Chris shade or for exmple on clerks cars for Sale site you get prices wich are the truth of the StorY.

Some Ones out there just want to have one dont interested in the tech just in the image

for them there are some Bling Blings for too much money.

Some think they get what they invested. but that cars are longer than one Year on the Market..

For EXAMPLE

In Europe there was a guy wich sold a 4 Door 1960
Barnfind in Collector condition.

he offerd the car for 8000 Euro
Than after 2 DAys the Price was 18.000
After he checked the MArket of Corvair in Europe he put 10.000 on his price for the car.

Another Offered 8 Cars for 8000 Euro.
Now 1 Month later he Priced one of the cars, a 110 4 Speed for 4.500
After he get help by a Car Dealer.

so
the demand determines the offer.

That is how my son started to call all Corvairs "Beep Beeps". He would stand in the front seat pushing the horn. He would laugh and laugh for hours.

I think that is true for most cars, with a few exceptions. Probably has to do with the package cost vs. the sum-of-the-parts thing.

People don't want to pay a lot for other folk's labor either.

Still... that's not why I bought a Corsa anyway. I don't care what other people think it's worth. I got it because I wanted that car, and while I don't like spending a lot on parts, in the end the fact that I've put so much of "myself" into it, makes it seem more like mine. I can afford to buy a nicely restored car, but I'd rather find a good solid platform and bring it back to life myself. It won't just be a Corsa, it will be John's Corsa.

Now... the next time I'm wedged underneath it, eating 53 years of road crud, trying to convince a rusty fitting to move, I'll deny I ever said any of the above...

I sold my Corsa Recently on Bring a Trailer bringing in the high teens. Have 3 more Corvairs going to auction soon on the same site. The good thing about them is they vet the cars and the process takes several weeks. They do not take every car submitted as they turn down one of my cars but finally did sell the car about 3 weeks ago on the forum. Highly recommend this auction site.

SoloCP,
It would have been neat to see your'67 on BAT.

The yellow '65 sedan on there now looks pretty rough.

They must not be very consistent in their vetting!

They turn down the 67. But have accepted my 61 Lakewood, 62 Monza and 63 Sedan. Those will be the last cars I will be selling in awhile. I have 2 cars a 64 Spyder Convertible that I have not driven in 5 years and a 57 Chevy I have only driven once this year. Decided to downsize and enjoy the different cars more often.

I also fairly recently sold a Corvair on BAT.

The process is interesting. They do filter through the cars they sell.
It's very much like an application to sell your car with their site.

I had a positive experience with them.
As mentioned the process does take a while.

As a word of advice if you choose to sell there; stay on top of the comments.
If you are very accessible for the duration of the auction, you are more likely to end up with the right person in the right car.

One negative comment can spiral out of control. This did not happen with my auction, but I have seen it with others.
The seller isn't there to answer a question or to justify a modification or improvement and then the bidding stalls.

Also BAT sets the reserve, obviously you have to agree on the number, but the reserve on my car was lower than I would have preferred.

In the end, the car sold to a great buyer/collector and it sold for a fair price. It was less money than I would have liked (isn't it always?).

However, as with selling anything, it's worth whatever someone is willing to pay. When my auction closed, I thought to myself "I guess that's what it's worth".

It's a good venue with great exposure and a worldwide audience.
I also shared my auction to the forums and Facebook groups to try to draw in more bidders.

The nice thing about BAT, or any auction with a low/reasonable reserve; You know it's going to be sold at the end of the week, one way or another.
You are not going through weeks or months of tire kickers, test drivers or people that just want to see one in person.

If you search "Corvair" from the BaT Home Page, you will get a chart showing selling prices for all Corvairs sold through the site as well as all of the discussion related to each sale. Lots of useful background to help you feel better about whatever you pay (or get) for your Corvair.
