Guess they aren't as knowledgeable as they seem...or they were just convinced the cars would be a bad investment.

Mike's brother Robbie picked a Rampside in Colorado a few years back, but it didn't make the show.

Robbie lives locally - and Mike used to. They put the truck up for sale when they got it back to Iowa - was a decent truck, but they wanted a good amount of money for it.

A local kid bought it - and damaged the differential somehow. I sold him some parts a couple years back, and its still not back together.

They are a great example of the business of buying low and selling high.

One way to look at it is Mike and Frank are doing their part to keep our cars affordable.

I remember the episode where they found a guy with an UltraVan and were "trying to buy it" from him. We talked about it on this forum at the time. They "offered" him something like $8,000 which was crazy but he "didn't bite". It was good theater but no way. Real pickers just don't throw money around like that. I like the show just because of all the old junk and occasional neat stuff they show but always ignore the prices they throw out there.

Here was our banter back then.

American Pickers UltraVan

Here's an exterior pic and as I remember, the inside is really, really rough. I think they may have put some good tires on and it and given it a bath since it was on TV but you get the idea.

Just saw the show. That's John D. King of the Flying Circus.

He probably told Frank and Mike the Corvairs were off the table.

Not more than 20 minutes form me. Club went through his father's collection 20 some years ago. John had some good cars at the time. Good bi-planes also! Lots of members bought parts cars/parts. He lives near the Flying Circus's field (Aerodrome).

Our club, CVCC, went to see the Flying Circus show in August, but rain stopped the show early. I had been there in July with the local AACA club, so I had already seen the show this year. I asked about the King's Corvairs at that time, and the workers said he still has a lot of them.

Where else can you see a fleet of bi-planes in active duty every Sunday. Sometimes they are flying over my garage when I'm working on cars. Oh look, wing walker training.grinning smiley

On the Pickers show, Mike is often seen wearing a jacket with a Conoco patch on the front and Joetown Garage on the back. Mike got the jacket from one of the members of the Iowa Corvair Enthusiasts that owns Joetown Garage. Wally B.owns Joetown Garage in Joetown, Iowa, just outside of Iowa City. Wally is a long time Corvair mechanic and VW mechanic. Mike is a fan of VW's and I believe Wally had done some work on his VW's.

Mike and Frank were in the same High School as I was at nearly the same time. I think they graduated with my younger brother. My family owned land in LeClaire Iowa until a couple of years ago. They should have picked my grandfather back when he was alive. He collected everything.

Enjoy the Corvair!
