Corvair Rough Start Rough Drive - What's going on?
Posted by: playerpage ()
Date: November 05, 2018 01:13PM

My Turbo Corvair was finally running well. I'd even taken it out last week and beat my highway driving distance record. (Just under 50 miles--I'm taking it slow, building up to greater distances.)

Then on Saturday (November 3rd, 2018) it started doing this. Ideas and diagnosis would be appreciated, before I start on repairs I might not need. Video below.

Dropped valve seat maybe, also sounds like the fan bearing is howling.

Would a bad fan bearing make the idle rough? And how to I test the valve seat?

Pull all plugs and crank engine. If, no compression testor or even a quick check, have someone check each cylinder for a puff of air as it rotates. The one with no or a low volume puff of air would be suspect cylinder.

Leave plugs in but disconnect coil to keep engine from firing. Now spin the engine with the starter, if it dropped a valve seat there will be low compression on that cylinder and when it hits that cylinder you'll heat the starter speed up, if it hits all six evenly then the compression is probably good.

Will do, Don!

I also just this minute invested in a compression tester. Arrives Wednesday.

So what you are saying is---one person starting the engine (sans coil) and another under the hood with a tester checking compression. Right?

And if the compression IS good, what diagnosis then.....?

Drills has them. They may even loan the compression tester.

Yes! I ordered a remote starter along with the compression tester.

We don't have a "Drills." We do have a very good independent auto parts dealer.

And I know there are places that hand out tools, but not in this town. Because they don't come back. sad smiley

Dang auto-correct again.

O'Reilly's may loan out the equipment, if he doesnt want to wait until he gets his tester. They will sell him the remote starter switch also. I got mine there.

When I do a compression test I remove all spark plugs for easier consistent cranking. I then open the throttle all the way while cranking for maybe 10 seconds. Enough for 2-3 compression cycles. Most testers will hold the compression reading untill you release it.

The cylinder with a dropped seat or collapsed lifter will show up quickly.

Disconnect the + coil lead to prevent it from making a carbon track on the coil tower. I'd also pull the fuse on your electric fuel pump.

When the valve seat dropped on my engine it was easy to tell one of the cylinders
had low compression because of the uneven speed when cranking. I had a weak starter
so it was more pronounced, but sounded very similar to your video.

I did not realize it was a dropped seat at first. Sometimes it would make quite a clatter,
which I thought was lifter noise. Later I realized it was the piston hitting the dislodged
seat. Other times the engine ran very smoothly and seemed to have plenty of power. I think
that is when the seat would re-seat and it would get some compression again.

I hope you don't have a dropped seat, but it sure sounds like you do ...

JohnVan is correct on all points.

It looks like you're missing the correct PCV Orifice tube. I've seen a homemade orifice fitting used with a rubber hose connected to the crankcase-to-air cleaner tube. If you don't have some kind of orifice restriction, it will have too large a vacuum leak to be able to adjust carb properly.

I'll look into that orafice. I like looking into orafices.

So if my valve seat IS dropped, does that mean a rebuild? If so, who would you recommend near the central coast or central valley or south part of California?

Thx, all.
