Does anyone know who was selling the LED lights at the 2018 swap meet last week in Palm Springs? I wanted to buy some lights from him, but forgot to go back after I borrowed some cash from my friend Rick. confused smiley

Yes, but how do these perform on the Vairs at night.

Anyone put these on yet?

Putting LEDs in any thing other than a projector is not a great idea. Good for being seen, but no reach plus blinding oncoming drivers. I am trying to fit a set of Daymaker knock offs. A tough fit due to the massive heat sink .

I was selling all kinds of LEDs including miniature trouble lamps, LED strips, switchback LEDs along with my clear turn signal and tail light lenses. If you were wanting to buy the LED headlights, they sold on Saturday afternoon.

Take a look at "vintagecarleds.com" for the 5.75" LED Headlights!

This looks good and will be one of my upgrades for the '67 more-door Monza!

These are the best LED Headlights I have seen and I have been looking for some time. If they work like I 'think' they will, I will have an "all LED" Corvair!

What is with the pricing?
$109 - $289
So which is it?
The housings are just cheap "Autopal H4" conversion housings, so those L.E.D.s better be something REALLY special!

That is the right place to look but that may not be the right model!?

This is going to be an "experiment" until we try it out and see what, if any, model and LED type will work.

The one Matt pointed out is the easiest to use but has a fan built in. I prefer the ones that don't!

Price will vary depending on which model and what options you choose

I will keep the forum up to date on my experiences when I start working on this next year. If any one else tries LED Headlights I hope they will let us know what they find!

As I stated in a post on another thread here.
Last summer, I passed a fellow on the freeway at night.
He had some REALLY trick looking L.E.D. headlights.
He was driving about 45 MPH, and I quickly saw why.
While his L.E.D. headlights LOOKED really cool, they had the WORST lighting pattern I have EVER seen!
There were about SIX, two foot by two foot squares of bright light randomly illuminating up portions of the road in front of him!

I'm trying to get these to fit. They are projectors, no fan just a large heat sink. The problem any LED in a non projector housing is they don't focus right. You get a whole lot of light right in front of you, but little to nothing far out. You also get a good view of the trees. The bad part is because it is so bright right in front of you it makes it even harder to see down the road.

I would guess that these LED lamps with optional Hella glass lenses should focus the light quite well. But could be wrong or the Hella glass lenses are not spcifically built for LED lamps.

That is exactly the issue Mel. I tried and returned several brands on my Sorento (even with projector lenses). It finally took throwing $$$$$ at them, now I'm happy. They look the same but don't work the same.

It takes PRECISION placement of the L.E.D. to make sure it is aimed EXACTLY on the reflector, or projection lens in order to receive lighting that matches what the original light housing was made to emit.

Even Hella does not get it right every time. I have a set of 7" round E-code lamps that I've been trying to warranty without result. The beam pattern is not up to their normal standards. By a long shot.

So I robbed my other set out of the project vehicle to run in my driver and they're wonderful.
Hopefully it's just a fluke and not a modern trend. The old ones are roughly 20 years old now, and the new ones are by now 3 at least.
I'm guessing that by this time they've ignored me long enough that there is no warranty. I'll just try the retailer again instead.

I've been wanting to try connecting it up on the bench and moving the H4 bulbs around at different angles and depths to see if that's the issue. Otherwise the lenses look identical.
I can't measure the curve of the reflector of course, so if there is a defect there, I won't be able to find it. I know they have tools and test instruments for that type of thing, but it's not likely to be found at Harbor Freight or Sears!

Good luck with your LED's

Paul

It takes more than precision location although that is part of it. They LED itself is physically larger than that of a quartz filament. So, basically not all of the lumens hit the sweet spot of the reflector and that is what mostly cause light splatter. The bulbs that finally worked well in my Sorento were adjustable so you could get the most amount of lumens to the correct point on the reflector. They also are about the most powerful you can buy. This is important because even if aimed perfectly not all of the LED output will hit the sweet spot and some will be lost due to scatter. When I installed them I left a quartz bulb in the opposite side, then adjusted the LED by matching the beam to the factory bulb by shining them at my white garage door at differences. Then I did the same for the other side, right down squirrel spotter beam.

Now the reason I am trying to make the Harley Daymaker's fit in the Vair is that these were engineered right from the get go to work with LEDS. They have several LEDs with different lenses. They get the light where you want and need it. Remember on a bike you only have one headlight (mostly). The cheap knockoffs I have throw a nice beam with a good cutoff on low beam. Fitment is the issue.

It seems I've created quite a stir here. I was actually looking for the LED work lights from AZ Dave. (I will PM you.) Thanks for all the responses and insight on headlights. I have GE Halogens and love them!

It was a good subject to start, lots of interest in all types of LEDs here. I love my halogens as well. However, now that I am used to HID in my wifes car and LEDs in mine, there is a lot of room for improvement.

In the title you should have asked who was the vendor was selling clear turn signal lenses. grinning smiley

Glad I have more of the work lights you wanted. I sold more miniature LED trouble lights on Sunday in the hour we spent loading up the van than we did all day Saturday.

Toby,
PM sent. Work lights ready to ship.
