I bought some carbon fiber applique. Thought that would be cool but haven't tried it yet.

I bought a Corsa dash for my 1965 Monza and have considered painting it Silver to match the original dash but am having difficulty locating the correct spray paint in a rattle can.
As an alternative, I have considered spraying it with a "Cast Iron" finish that I have been using on some of my suspension components. It is Dupli-color DE1651

For reference, I have included a photo of my repainted rear trailing arms and some other pieces I sprayed with this finish.

Why not red wrinkle paint?

With gray wrinkle being unobtainium, I used Rustoleum Hammered Gray. I like the result. It's a textured finish, but with a larger texture pattern than wrinkle.

Thanks for the ideas.

-Red wrinkle wouldn't work with the interior colors IMO.

-I've tried carbon fiber wraps in the past but they start to pull off the more curved portions of the panels after several months.

-That cast iron color looks interesting. I might try it over the top of a wrinkled finish to get both.

-One of my good friends did the hammered silver finish so I clearly can't just copy himsmiling smiley

Better test that idea on a sample piece of metal first.
Any new "solvent" laying down on wrinkle paint might do anything to it!
It might just go ALL WONKY!
Who knows. Anyone ever tried it?

I cleaned my coupe's glove box door with acetone. Let it air dry for 30 minutes, then applied a light coat of VHT GM Satin Black over the production paint. Looks good. No adverse effects.

If you actually get around to painting your dash with the Cast Iron color before I do, does it mean I copied you?confused smiley

If you do go with the Cast Iron, let us know how you like it.

Vinyl Wrap
Not paint but many colors and textures available. This is brushed steel. I will try brushed aluminum next time.

Is the applique staying on OK? I have that carbon fiber-look material that I am contemplating for my convertible.

Bill, your cars are strikingly beautiful! I took several pictures of your brown coupe at Knoxville. Something about your car/color combination that really appeals to me. I want to be first in line if you ever sell that one.

Enjoy the Corvair!

(need to update my sig with my 62 one of these days)

Thanks Paul. This stuff sticks real good. There are some curves that can be difficult. I ended up with one wrinkle. You can see it here. I see it which makes me want to do it over. You will need a heat gun or hair dryer.

thumbs upthumbs up
I have been wanting to try a Wood-Grain Hydro dipped dash in one of my Vairs.
They have a really nice, realistic pattern available.
I have a Corsa dash with peely paint, maybe it is time to step up to the plate and commit.

I've done three different vinyl wraps: brushed aluminum, silver carbon fiber and grey carbon fiber. They look good for about 6 months then they start to pull up...at least mine did.

Hydro dipping is NOT the same as a vinyl wrap!

You should at least look into it.

I wasn't commenting on hydro dipping. I know it's completely different and really cool but not something I can do in my garage...unfortunately.
